India rout Pakistan 7-1 to enter Hockey World League quarters

In the second match of the day, Argentina scored their second victory in Pool B with a 5-2 thumping of Malaysia as Gonzalo Pelliat converted four penalty corners while Faccundo Pelliani scored the 5th goal for Argentina.

In the absence of key players like Rupinderpal Singh, India's young backline, led by Harmanpreet Singh, has displayed gritty performances and conceded just two goals. Floris van Son, Brenden Bissett and Gordon Johnston scored one goal each in the 28th, 50th and 60th minutes.


The hockey fraternity in India has always been vocal about the pride and respect it has for the Indian soldiers and always condemned such barbaric acts. Pakistan's only goal was made by Muhammad Umar. It was a proper sniper's goal, deflecting a deflection from SV Sunil into the target. In the next minute, India messed up a penalty corner of their own, but made up for it by doubling his tally in the very next minute.

The tournament also serves as the qualifiers for the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup. But the hockey team entered the field with a great sense of goal. Pakistan need to defeat Scotland in the last pool match to qualify for the quarter-finals.


India may well have suffered a 180-rout at the hands of Pakistan in the Champions Trophy cricket final but they came out on tops on the other side of London - in field hockey.

Pakistan lost 0-4 to The Netherlands in their opening match on Thursday and will play Canada later on Friday.

With their place already secured in the quarterfinals, India would be hoping to keep up the good work and keep a clean slate going into the business end of the tournament.


Despite defeat, it was a special day for Canada's Gabriel Ho-Garcia, who played his 100th senior global match. India also drew a crucial match against them at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Within a minute, Akashdeep had restored India's six-goal supremacy.
