A list of names - including some Republican members of Congress - was found with the Alexandria shooter, according to a law enforcement source and Rep. Mo Brooks, who was on the list and present at the practice but unharmed by the shooting.

The gunman responsible was shot and later died.

Sava estimates there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's pelvis and says doctors don't intend to try to remove them all, as that could cause more harm than good. That circumstance is not uncommon for that type of injury, known as a transpelvic gunshot wound, the trauma surgeon said.

"Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg". Doctors said his prognosis was positive on Friday. Hodgkinson had posted comments critical of President Donald Trump on his social-media accounts and engaged in a profane tirade about Trump in a chance conversation with an auto mechanic the day before the attack in Alexandria, where Hodgkinson had been living in his van since about March.

A source said investigators are not sure of the significance of the names and it is not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting.

The Louisiana Republican is recovering from "substantial damage" he suffered when a bullet pierced his left hip and traveled directly across to the other hip, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said Friday.

Scalise's Chief of Staff shared a message from the congressman's family at a Friday press conference. He added that Scalise "will be able to walk and, hopefully, run".

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

As congressional Republicans and Democrats joined Thursday night in their annual baseball game, played this year in Scalise's honor, word came from the hospital that he remained in critical condition, but had "improved in the last 24 hours".

In that bad crime, the country also witnessed the incredible heroism of the Capitol Police, he said, adding that Special Agent Crystal Griner - who he also met during his visit to the hospital - raced into gunfire, along with Special Agent David Bailey.
