The Daily Caller said it had confirmed three of the names: Brooks, South Carolina Congressman Jeff Duncan and Arizona Congressman Trent Franks. The congressman remains in critical condition at the hospital's trauma center.

Furthermore, the story described how Hodgkinson was likely suffering from some kind of mental illness and his political ideology had "little" or nothing to do with his attempt to kill only Republicans.

Though there are no other legal problems listed in St. Clair County, which includes Belleville, since 2011, Hodgkinson did come to the attention of local law enforcement as recently as March 24.

When Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun control group, analyzed Federal Bureau of Investigation data on mass shootings from 2009-2015, it found that 57 percent of the cases included a spouse, former spouse, or other family member among the victims - and that 16 percent of the attackers had previously been charged with domestic violence.

Authorities have been investigating Hodgkinson's social media posts and personal items. A single shot left Scalise, 51, with a shattered bone in his left hip and internal injuries that caused severe bleeding.

"Michael said he wasn't close with his brother, but said James was politically active and led a regular life", Mark wrote.

Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and four others were injured in the shooting before U.S. Capitol Police fatally shot Hodgkinson.

Exasperated and seemingly at a loss to explain the shooting, she said: "I don't know anything about this". The team was practicing for Thursday's charity game against the Democratic Congressional baseball team at Nationals Park, an annual tradition dating back to 1909. She said Hodgkinson was home all day, and she suspected he left because "he just wanted a break from it".

Tyson Foods lobbyist Matt Mika, who was shot multiple times and critically wounded, has undergone surgery and doctors expect a full recovery, his family said Saturday. The rhetoric strikes me as a normal and expected part of democracy, i.e. tough talk from both sides.

Wagner said there was no way to predict that Hodgkinson would take such violent action. "I can't help you at all". At the time of the shooting Scalise, the third highest-ranking member of the House of Representatives, was being protected by Capitol Police security detail.

Hodgkinson was armed with a 7.62-caliber rifle and a 9-mm handgun. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". "There's still a lot of things that can happen, there's still a lot of forks in the road that we may not even see yet", Sava said.

Hodgkinson submitted several letters to the editor of the Belleville News-Democrat throughout the years.
