The shooter is a man with a violent criminal history and police believe he volunteered for the Bernie Sanders campaign.

James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, was the alleged shooter, and was pronounced dead Wednesday morning.

No other members of Congress were shot. He said the GOP members were "sitting ducks", and the Capitol Police security detail assigned to Rep. Steve Scalise likely saved their lives.

Capitol Police Officer David Bailey, one of two officers wounded Wednesday morning, has been a member of the department for nine years, according to a LinkedIn account under his name.

America is praying for all the victims of this awful shooting, Mr Trump said, describing it as a "very, very brutal assault".

FBI Agent Tim Slater would not characterise the attack, saying "We are exploring all angles".

"Some people don't like what they see", he said. Officials said several other people were also wounded.

USA representatives Ron DeSantis and Jeff Duncan had ducked out of baseball practice early on Wednesday when a middle-aged man in the parking lot asked them if the players in red shirts on the field were Republicans or Democrats.

Rep. Mike Bishop, R-Mich., said Scalise was at second base when he was shot.

JEFF FLAKE: All of a sudden, we heard a very loud shot. "Violence of any kind is unacceptable is our society and I condemn this action in the strongest possible terms", he said. "Then finally we heard the response from the Capitol Hill police".

"It would have been a massacre. If you were to run out while the killer was still shooting, he could have shot anybody", he told reporters. Republican Mo Brooks from Alabama told the United States news broadcaster that the Louisiana Congressman sustained "a hip wound".

"The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex where lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m. We saw courage in the face of death, and we saw examples of why all Americans should be grateful everyday for law enforcement officers around this country". That game will go on, according to NBC News.

Held nearly every year since 1909, the Congressional Baseball Game - slated to take place at Nationals Park Stadium in Washington - is a well-loved showdown between Senate and House members of both Republican and Democrat camps. Early Wednesday afternoon, MedStar Washington Hospital Center stated on Twitter that Scalise "remains in critical condition".

"Prior to entering surgery, the Whip was in good spirits and spoke to his wife by phone". A US Capitol Police officer who was also hurt in the gun attack was also receiving treatment at the facility, situated about three miles northeast of the White House. Hodgkinson was taken to the hospital, where he later died.

Senator Jeff Flake told VOA an officer who had been shot "ran around quite a while with a wound" while firing at the gunman.

Representative Steve Scalise, Republican of Louisiana, a gregarious lawmaker who rose from the backbench to leadership in Congress, is the most well known.
