Comey: Trump administration 'lied' about the Federal Bureau of Investigation

All broadcast networks and cable news stations will preempt programming to air the proceedings live.

But it was a Democrat, Sen Dianne Feinstein of California, who asked the question that many Republicans have raised in the weeks since Comey's firing as one media leak followed another revealing Comey's claims about Trump's inappropriate interactions with him.

Are you watching the hearing? "That happened. It's about as unfake as you can possibly get".

Comey's took exacting notes of his conversations with the president, even quoting him in written testimony - but for some senators, those details are a reason to doubt his interpretation of events. I spoke alone with President Obama twice in person (and never on the phone) - once in 2015 to discuss law enforcement policy issues and a second time, briefly, for him to say goodbye in late 2016. The FBI's "values and abilities run deep and wide", Comey said, reiterating that the agency will "relentlessly pursue" its mission.

Former FBI director James Comey will finally make his much-anticipated appearance Thursday on Capitol Hill, providing dramatic testimony that President Trump pressed him to pledge his loyalty and drop the investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn's ties to Russian Federation. Comey was there with other members of the United States intelligence community for a meeting.

"This is as good as it gets", Risch told Comey. The Justice Department informed the White House counsel's office that Flynn was being untruthful shortly after Trump was inaugurated in January.

Comey also said that in a March 30 phone call with the president, Trump asked him what he could do to "lift the cloud" of the Russian Federation investigation, and also said that they "need" to get the fact out that Trump himself wasn't under investigation.

Comey accused Trump of blatant lies.

. But of course he didn't drop the investigation.

Given that the first article of impeachment written up on Richard Nixon was about obstruction of justice, the intricacies of this point matter. But more than an hour into the testimony, two of his sons are. Legal experts have said that Trump's efforts to clear the room of Vice President Mike Pence and Attorney General Jeff Sessions before making the request could be key in determining that.

In Comey's prepared remarks released ahead of his testimony yesterday, Comey described a conversation with Trump at the Oval Office on February 14.

"I've seen the tweets about tapes".

He added: "Lordy, I hope there are tapes". He was anxious that Trump would lie about what happened.

Comey said Trump whispered, "I really look forward to working with you". Trump fired him last month.

Comey's remarks are his first since he was sacked.

"The administration then chose to defame me and more importantly the Federal Bureau of Investigation by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the work force had lost confidence in its leader", Comey said. "The FBI is honest". The FBI is strong and the FBI is and always will be independent.
