CNN Hosts Make Spelling Bee Champion Attempt to Spell 'Covfefe'

During day one of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. all eyes were on a six-year-old kindergartner from Oklahoma. Marocain is a type of crepe fabric of silk or rayon and the word is derived from French.

Vinay takes home a $40,000 cash prize and trophy, along with a $2,500 US savings bond and complete reference library, a trip to New York City and Hollywood.

Asked about her competitor, Rohan, Ananya said, "It was interesting to go back and forth for so many rounds". "She played to win and win she did", the National Spelling Bee's official account tweeted on Friday.

Meet 12-year-old Ananya Vinay, from Fesco, California.


The rivals had correctly spelled words including cheiropompholyx, durchkomponiert and tchefuncte as each waited for the other to slip up.

"OK, you really have to give me a word I know right now".

"Congratulations to our 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion, Ananya Vinay". Her score on the written spelling and vocabulary test would have been high enough to make the top 50 previous year, but she missed a relatively easy word, "multivalent", on stage.

She is the first solo national spelling bee champ since 2013.


The Oscar-nominated documentary "Spellbound", released in 2002, captures the 1999 Scripps National Spelling Bee and follows eight participants as they prepare for the event.

$400 in reference works from Encyclopaedia Britannica and a three-year membership to Britannica Online Premium.

New rules this year are aimed at preventing tie endings like last year's, when two joint winners both got $40,000 cash prizes. She won United States dollars 40,000 in cash and prizes for her effort. The field was narrowed to 40 finalists on Wednesday, based upon two oral rounds of spelling and the results of a written spelling and vocabulary test.

According to her she arrived at the competition with high hopes and was disappponted by her performance but will not allow that to derail her ambitions.
