Chris Tillman: Tillman allows five runs in loss to Red Sox

Rodriguez slipped off the mound during the latter stage of his warmup for Thursday night's start against the Baltimore Orioles.

He gave up three hits, struck out seven and did not allow a runner past first base until Manny Machado led off the seventh with a home run. "I didn't see Manny because Moreland was right in front of the line", Pena said.

"The ball was carrying tonight", said skipper Buck Showalter, who's club moved to within a half-game of second place Boston. Really the only questions to be answered are whether Tillman will be able to complete at least five innings - he's not even averaging that much per start so far - and whether Sale will toss a no-hitter against the Orioles. He had told the press that his fall was just caused by his foot landing strangely while tossing warm up pitches. "I know we checked with him when he came in, checked with him in between every single inning, wasn't complaining of anything and we continued on".

Rodriguez is dealing with his third right knee subluxation in the last 16 months. Asher also recorded a scoreless inning of relief in a 6-2 loss to the Red Sox on April 23.

Boston Red Sox's Andrew Benintendi follows through on a single against the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning of a baseball game, Sunday, June 4, 2017, in Baltimore. He allowed three runs and six hits with nine strikeouts and one walk in six innings. Although the Red Sox have been better as of late, Boston fans are not going to settle for another first round exit in the playoffs this season similar to a year ago. Kluber was 18-9 with a 3.14 ERA last season and went 4-1 with a 1.83 ERA in six postseason starts.

With Rodriguez out of the rotation, the Red Sox will be down another solid starter for some time.

It's a good thing, too, because the 2016 AL Cy Young Award victor got a whole lot sharper as the game wore on. The Orioles had their three-game winning streak halted Saturday but will look to capture the series behind the struggling Chris Tillman, who is 10-3 lifetime against the Red Sox.

In his start, Rodriguez pitched 5.2 innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits for the loss.

"We're neck-and-neck with this team and this division is going to be bunched up for the foreseeable future", Boston manager John Farrell said.

Red Sox: LHP Chris Sale (6-2, 2.77 ERA), who has won his last five decisions and leads the majors with 110 strikeouts, gets the start in the series finale Sunday.

After missing Saturday's game because of dehydration, Josh Rutledge came off the bench for defensive purposes in the series finale.
