Augmented Reality, Apple is here with its ARKit for iOS

The event was packed full of new information relating to almost everything Apple offers, so head below for easy access to information on it all. But with the company feeling pressure from rivals in the home computer and laptop spaces - and with many of its Mac lines having languished without significant updates for quite a while - many analysts were tipping an uncharacteristically hardware-heavy show, and that's exactly what we got.

Apple is hoping a new smart home speaker will strike a chord with music lovers - the latest test of the iPhone maker's ability to redefine markets originally staked out by its rivals. Created to pair with an iPhone and play music via a user's Apple Music subscription, the device will also field queries and control other smart home devices thanks to Siri integration.

HomePod will start shipping in the USA, U.K, and Australia this December for $349. In the USA it will cost $US349 ($466), more than twice the price of its Google competitor. During Jobs' last decade, Apple introduced the iPod, iPhone and iPad - all huge commercial successes that both reshaped daily life and swamped previous digital music players, smartphones and tablets. The increased power means Apple needed to craft a new kind of cooling mechanism to keep the components' temperatures lowered in the skinny enclosure.

MacBook Pros will be shipped with Intel's Kaby Lake processors and faster SSDs. More powerful 21.5-inch models with 4K screens start at $1899, and 27-inch models with 5K screens start at $2699. Here's what's coming, courtesy of Apple's introduction of its new operating system.

The new iPads are available for order immediately, and will be delivered starting in the week of June 12. And not even Apple can put enough spin on this type of demo to make it actually seem exciting.

As was expected, iPad Pro is available in a new 10.5-inch model with an A10X Fusion chip and updated cameras.

The 10.5-inch Pro has some impressively skinny bezels and weighs in at a tiny 469 grams.

The Photos app is adding new filters, and Apple says it has improved the face detection feature.

The new iPad Pro also comes with a better camera - the same one found in the iPhone 7 - along with more storage, a better display and faster refreshing of moving images. The displays on all three of these iPads have the same 264 ppi density, which still falls short of the aging iPad Mini's 326 ppi display.

"Just like we did with portable music, we want to reinvent home music", Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the Worldwide Developers Conference, where HomePod was unveiled, becoming Apple's first new device since the release of the Apple Watch in 2015. The Apple Music app also gains a "Shared Up Next" feature, similar in concept to the "iTunes DJ" feature that was phased out in iTunes 11, that will allow users to contribute to a shared play queue.

For the first time, iOS 11 will allow you to make and receive payments to and from friends and family via Apple Pay.

Apple previewed the next version of watchOS 4, its operating system for the Apple Watch. Safari is adding autoplay blocking, so loud videos don't start playing without your approval. Your Siri interactions are synced across devices (and encrypted.) I don't know how much you'll appreciate the new, supposedly more natural-sounding male and female Siri voices. We'd make a guess that Apple will try and make the same devices suitable for iOS 11, but there's always the chance the iPhone 5 will get cut.
