It has also been suggested that maybe purchasing the furniture could also be done within the app itself, thus saving customers time from having to travel to IKEA. "It's super interesting to us".

The new AR app will be available in Fall 2017. Beyond pilots with third-party e-commerce sites, Ikea caused a stir with a foray into AR together with Apple.

IKEA is one of Apple's launch partners for the augmented reality features in iOS 11.

Apple management mentioned IKEA very briefly in the iOS 11 keynote and mentioned the virtual furniture app, although they didn't say a lot about it.

The news came in a recent interview that Digital.di had with Michael Valdsgaard, the digital transformation manager at Ikea. The app will allow users to try out virtual furniture at home, and possibly even make the purchase from inside the app. It's possible that ordering could take place in the app, but not in the first version. Now, as per the company, Apple's AR platform will allow for a much greater quality and consistency.

The furniture retailer explained that their new virtual furniture app will be the first augmented reality app that will enable consumers to "make buying decisions", a spokesperson for the Swedish company told the website. We have nearly 400 of them and we want to complement them in as many ways as possible, through mobile, social media, AR and third-party e-commerce players. Still, Valdsgaard notes that Ikea is a furniture store first, and expects its retail locations to remain the major source of its sales.

The new tech may be released closed to the new iOS 11 debut with 500-600 products to try out in your home.

"The fact that Apple gets it this good with one or two cameras in its beta stage, it is pretty incredible", said AR developer Adam Debreczeni.
