Why Melania covers her head at some events and not others

The two men have in the past clashed on issues such as migration, climate change and a Mexico-US wall. Trump gave the pope a case of books from Martin Luther King Jr., and the Catholic leader presented the US president with a medal by a Roman artist that symbolizes peace.

During the election campaign, Mr Trump declared that the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance, of which the United States is a principle member, was "obsolete". Details of the traditional gifts exchanged by Trump and Francis have not yet been revealed, the report said. "We had a fantastic meeting", the president said. "We're liking Italy very, very much and it was an honor to be with the Pope".

It could have caused a diplomatic incident but a culinary quip from Pope Francis seemed to have gone down well with Donald Trump and his wife Melania. He added, "I leave the Vatican more determined than ever to pursue PEACE in our world".

Trump posted a short video of his meeting on his Twitter feed, showing the two talking at a table.

"It is with all hope that you may become an olive tree to make peace", Francis told Trump.

Trump then called Francis "disgraceful" for doubting his faith.

Meanwhile, past photos of the pontiff meeting with President Barack Obama show a range of moods.

The Vatican described the discussions as "cordial" and emphasised the two men's joint opposition to abortion and shared concern for persecuted Christians in the Middle East.

It's always been a tradition for visiting political leaders and celebrities to exchange gifts with the Pope. Mr Trump gave the Pope a boxed set of writings by the civil rights leader Martin Luther King. Francis also gave a message of peace and three bound papal documents that to some degree define his papacy and priorities, including the family and the environment. He thanked the Pope and expressing "We can use peace". The Pope said.... niente.

Later, Trump met with Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, briefing reporters on Air Force One after the meeting, said terrorism and climate change came up.

Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, also wore a black veil and a long, dark dress.

This story has been corrected to reflect the pope asked about potica, not pizza.

The charismatic 80-year-old - a decade Trump's senior - warmly shook the First Lady's hand and said, via an interpreter, "What do you give him to eat?".

First Lady Melania visited the Vatican-owned Pediatric hospital.

The First Lady was meeting the pontiff in the vatican with Donald Trump when he politely inquired: "What are you feeding him, potica?".

In Brussels, Trump met Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde and held talks with Michel, while around 6,000 people rallied against his policies in the centre of the city.

He is also set to attend a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels on May 25 and a G7 summit in Sicily on May 26 before returning to the U.S.

This visit will be about damage limitation with the fervent hope of establishing some kind of transatlantic chemistry, the BBC's Europe editor Katya Adler says.
