White Supremacist Charged After Killing 2 in Portland Attack

The two women he was abusing - one of whom was said by eyewitnesses to have been wearing a headscarf - left the scene before police could speak to them.

The attack unfolded hours before the start of Ramadan, Islam's holy month, when most of the world's 1.6 billion Muslims observe a daily religious fast.

Namkai-Meche's mother, Asha Deliverance, mourned her son in a Facebook post. She wrote: "He was a hero and will remain a hero on the other side of the veil". Shining bright star I love you forever, ' she said.

Namkai-Meche graduated previous year from Reed College in Portland with a degree in economics and was an intern at a consulting firm.

Best was an Army veteran who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan.


Police said the incident happened Friday afternoon, with multiple officers responding at 4:30 p.m. local time to a report of a disturbance on an eastbound light-rail train involving a man who had stabbed people. He was identified as 21-year-old Micah David-Cole Fletcher, of Southeast Portland. A memorial grew all day Saturday outside the transit center in Portland, as people stopped with flowers, candles, signs and painted rocks.

After fleeing the scene, he was arrested late Friday and is now being held without bail. He said the men were attacked after at least a couple of them tried to intervene after the suspect was "ranting and raving" and using language that could be characterized as hate or bias speech, some of which was anti-Muslim.

Dyjuana Hudson, a mother of one of the women, was quoted by US media as saying that the man began a racial tirade as soon as he spotted them.

A third victim, a poet, survived the attack, but is receiving medical treatment for serious injuries.

They added that the campaign is organized by Muslims on a platform intended for Islamic crowdfunding projects, but that they welcomed donations from everyone, in order to ease the victims' families' "burdens in some way and also show our heartfelt appreciation for their heroic acts against Islamophobia". "He bravely did what anyone should do when confronted with terrorism and stepped in to stop the harassment of Muslim women by a known White Supremacist".


Christian, who was seen to make Nazi salutes at a free speech rally in April and who posted racist commentary on social media, is expected in court this week. Their deaths are being mourned this weekend, and police are investigating the background of Jeremy Joseph Christian, the 35-year-old accused of the two men's killing. Draped in an American flag, he yelled "I'm a nihilist", and shouted profanity and racial slurs.

They all intervened after a man launched into a verbal tirade against the teens, one wearing a hijab.

He has a criminal record of kidnapping, robbery, and weapon convictions. This was particularly evident in his poetry, Cordeta said.

Two men lost their lives and another was injured for doing the right thing, standing up for people they didn't know against hatred.
