According to Jacques, while the US hit a Syrian tank and two bulldozers, the convoy has still not fully retreated from the deconfliction zone.

In its announcement of the strike, the coalition said it targeted "pro-regime forces".

"A convoy going down the road didn't respond to numerous ways for it to be warned off from getting too close to coalition forces in At-Tanf", a U.S. defense official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

"Any real effort to combat terrorism and to limit the Iranian influence.is in the interest of the Syrian people and the people of the region and global peace and security", said delegation leader Nasr Hariri.

Forces fighting ISIS are moving towards southern Syria "to defeat the group and to occupy the power vacuum that its defeat would leave", according to the Times.

A commander in the alliance fighting in support of Assad called the strike a "warning raid", adding it was not aimed at causing casualties but instead stopping the advance. But we will defend our troops'.

Several hundred US advisers are in Syria to help train and organize a loose network of opposition groups, called the Syrian Democratic Forces, to defeat ISIS.

The reports indicated that the military convoy hit consisted of members of a pro-Assad Syrian militia, not the official Syrian armed forces.

The official statement said that the vehicles did not stop despite the show of force and warning shots.

The officials weren't authorized to speak publicly on the matter and demanded anonymity. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the strike destroyed vehicles and killed eight militiamen.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said on Friday that a United States military strike the previous day against militia supported by the Syrian government was an unacceptable violation of Syria's sovereignty, Russian news agencies reported.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A 34-mile defensive zone exists around the base, and it is believed these forces strayed inside that.

The official statement said that Russian Federation had made "apparent" attempts to "dissuade Syrian pro-regime movement south toward At Tanf", but that those efforts were "unsuccessful".

Elsewhere in Syria on May 18, IS attacked several government-held villages in central Syria, capturing at least one of them.

IS fighters also launched an offensive against Assad-held territory in the western province of Hama, seeking to take control of a strategic supply route leading to the nation's largest city Aleppo.

The U.S. -led coalition did not signal it would cede ground around Tanf.
