Trump, who is Protestant, is the first United States president to have Jewish members of his immediate family.

"Never mentioned the word Israel", Trump added. "We understand each other", Netanyahu said, thanking Trump for "the change in American policy on Iran" and the "reassertion of American leadership in the Middle East".

"Over the course of my lifetime, I've always heard that perhaps the toughest deal to make is the deal between the Israelis and the Palestinians", Trump said as he met with Abbas at the White House earlier this month. Because a majority of the people in Israel, unlike the media, they love us. But in the Gaza Strip, dozens of Palestinians rallied against Trump and burned his picture and an effigy of him.

Clashes erupted in the West Bank as Palestinians declared a strike in solidarity with hundreds of hunger striking prisoners held in Israeli jails.

And opening hours for passage across the main Jordan River bridge linking the Palestinian territory will be extended to 24 hours a day. We are honored to have you here with us, as we mark fifty years of "Jerusalem Day", Yom Yerushalayim.

Yair Netanyahu: "Very hard, very hard".

Trump, who arrived with a massive delegation that included Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, his son-in-law and adviser Jared Kushner, his daughter Ivanka, and his Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt, made brief public statements when he landed just after noon, at both late meetings with Netanyahu, and following a meeting with President Reuven Rivlin.
