The New York Yankees retire Derek Jeter's No. 2

Because the truth is, no matter where you go in the world, when a place feels like home, as NY does to me, you never really leave.

Mazara hit a tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the seventh right after Elvis Andrus' RBI double, both off reliever Ryan Madson (0-3). One couldn't stay on the field while the other became a future 1st ballot Hall of Famer. I've hung up my uniform, and I know this much for a fact: I wouldn't be the person I am today without you. Jealousy? That's probably the case. This is a big day not just for Yankee/Jeter fans, but for Major League Baseball fans all over the world. Seriously though, what didn't this guy do throughout his career? He is without question the most decorated baseball player in history.

Derek Jeter entered to Frank Sinatra's "My Way" and exited to Tina Turner's "Simply The Best". "When I came here, Jim Leyritz had it".

He won five Gold Gloves for defensive excellence at one of the game's crucial fielding positions, and five Silver Slugger awards for being the best offensive player at the position. Springer had his fourth multihomer game, his first since last May 26, and raised his season home run total to nine. How about when he caught a ball on the run in a game against the Sox and went flying into the crowd. "You're going to go through that". He had gone six games and 27 at-bats since his previous home run on May 3.

This was another and vintage Derek Jeter moment in the Bronx. Legendary stuff from a legendary player.

"It was always kind of our dream to be able to play here and play in the big leagues and playing in her home city", Bregman said.

The timing of Jeter's ceremony seems aligned by the heavens: It marks the end of a generation of players which brought the Yankees many trips to the playoffs and five championships, and the beginning of a new generation in Gary Sanchez, Aaron Judge, and Greg Bird, among others.

In addition to getting his jersey enshrined in Yankees' history, Jeter received a number of gifts.

Retired New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and his wife Hannah Jeter stand beside his Monument Psrtk plaque during an on-field, pregame ceremony retiring Jeter's number 2 at Yankee Stadium in New York, Sunday, May 14, 2017.
