The white gunman who opened fire on a group of black party-goers at a San Diego apartment complex Sunday was a vehicle mechanic who struggled with massive debt and a failing marriage in the last two years.

A police helicopter arrived first, and the pilot reported seeing multiple victims on the ground and that Selis appeared to be reloading in the pool area, Zimmerman said. Authorities say the gunman, Peter Selis, 49, was angry about a breakup with his girlfriend and chose to call her as he went out and shot strangers so she could hear the whole thing.

The suspect, Peter Selis, 49, shot four black women, two black men and one Latino man Sunday, police said.

Chief Shelley Zimmerman said Monday that the shooter, 49-year-old Peter Selis, was speaking with his ex-girlfriend on his cellphone during the rampage because he wanted her to hear the carnage.

A man upset at a break-up opened fire at a pool party and carried on calmly shooting from his seat while phoning his ex-girlfriend, say police.

Six of the shooting victims were expected to survive, Zimmerman said.

A San Diego police officer stands guard in front a La Jolla apartment building after a shooting Sunday, April 30, 2017, in San Diego. The guard's name has not been released.

One victim, 34-year-old Thomas Blea, said he was grateful to a security guard at the apartment complex who hustled him and two other victims quickly to safety. "Within the next 13 minutes, we received countless calls from residents who said they heard five to seven shots, neighbors yelling, and that someone was outside with a gun".

Court records show he filed for bankruptcy in October 2015, claiming debts of $108,028 and only $14,100 in assets.

At least one victim also lived at the apartment complex and one of the men shot - nicknamed "Ki" - was celebrating his 50th birthday. As police approached the area, the suspect fired his weapon and continued to fire until a sergeant and two officers shot him and he was pronounced deceased.

Police said the eight victims, all adults, were hospitalized.

Investigators have not found any writings or evidence from internet searches that Selis had planned the shootings, Ahearn said. "I just learned that the one life lost in the senseless and tragic mass shooting in San Diego was my childhood friend, who was more like family, Miss Monique Clark", Cannon posted on Instgram. Griffin said "Ki" has undergone two surgeries.
