Robbie Ray apologized for keeping reporters waiting at his locker after the game. "I've said before, sometimes you can have too much time out there, thinking".

"Sorry, but I finished my workout later than normal", the Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander said.

Angels 9, Braves 3 • Albert Pujols hit his 599th career homer in host Los Angeles' nine-run third inning. He allowed just 4 hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out 10. "It's insane how things work sometimes...tie ballgame, had the opportunity to be able to try to do something and get on base, and I was able to deliver". "Get the ball back, get on the rubber, get the sign and go".

Chris Owings would then hit a 2-out double to score Fuentes and give the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead.

It really did, taking a lightning-fast 2 hours, 10 minutes.

Jake Lamb lined a single leading in the fifth for the D-backs' first hit.

"It was a very professional effort on his part", Pittsburgh Manager Clint Hurdle said. This continues his good work of late, as he has now pitched 6 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings. Ivan Nova, who is 4-1 over his last seven starts for Pittsburgh, opposes Ray.

A two-run seventh pushed the lead to 3-0.

Paul Goldschmidt doubled and Lamb singled to start the Arizona seventh. Fuentes drove in the second run with a groundout.

Ray is 4-1 with a 0.64 ERA in six road starts, compared to 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in five starts at Chase Field.

Neither team mounted a threat in the first three innings.

NOTES: The Pirates placed backup C Chris Stewart on the 10-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain and recalled C Elias Diaz from Triple-A Indianapolis. His ankle got caught at the base of a short fence that separates the stands from the playing field. Nova cruised through the first half of this one, throwing just 43 pitches in five scoreless innings. He is likely to make a start for Indianapolis on Friday.

It was impressive because it gave the Pirates a win in a game they had so almost let slip away with two Arizona runs in the top of the inning. The Pirates and Diamondbacks wrap up the series at 12:35 p.m. Wednesday at PNC Park. Kuhl is winless in nine starts since beating Atlanta on April 8 in his season debut.
