Hudson thanked them for their legacy, saying, "Real legacy is what they have instilled in us kids".

"To you, I owe my wonderful life", Russell said, addressing Hawn. "I'm a bit of a scientist I guess you could say". "I don't think so". "Really, I mean it", Witherspoon began her speech. "I love you Goldie", Witherspoon added. "You do that and it's cool, and you end up with her for 34 years", said O'Brien.

The ceremony came one day before the release of Russell's latest movie, "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2", and eight days before the release of Hawn's first film since 2002, "Snatched", playing a mother whose vacation with her daughter (Amy Schumer) goes terribly wrong.

Witherspoon meanwhile shared her appreciation of Hawn and how the actress inspired her.

Witherspoon paid a tearful tribute to Hawn, calling the Academy Award victor a "legend" and "icon" who had broken all sorts of barriers for women.

"I always thought I'd be talking about them at a wedding or something", Hudson said at the ceremony. Thank you for inspiring women and actresses to control their own destinies and for inspiring women to demand respect, no matter where they are and what they are doing. She described a time in 1986 when her father had taken her to see "Wildcats", the feel-good sports comedy film starring Hawn as a sunshine-y high school track coach who quits her job to coach a football team across town. She's changed my life and she's quite simply my idol. "It's been such a long time since we ever did anything like this".

Speaking after director Quentin Tarantino, Kurt and Goldie's daughter, Kate Hudson, relished the opportunity to celebrate her parents in the absence of a wedding. It's really kind of great.

Although she and Russell have been together for over three decades - they fell in love on the set of WWII drama Swing Shift - the couple famously refrained from taking the wedding path.
