Schumer said in a brief, somber floor speech Tuesday that he was "shaken" by the report that Trump asked Comey "to shut down an active investigation into a close political associate".

Trump unexpectedly fired Comey last week, in a move Trump acknowledged making at least in part because of Comey's handling of the FBI investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to meddle in the 2016 election.

His comments come after allegations US President Donald Trump shared classified information with Russian Federation, which was followed by reports Trump had asked then-FBI Director James Comey to stop investigating ousted adviser Michael Flynn.

"I think he has lost all credibility here on the Hill with respect to his role as commander-in-chief", he said.

"The same thing that you advised Richard Nixon, which he didn't do... get it all out ... it's not going to be over until every aspect of it is thoroughly examined and the American people make a judgment". But Trump said, "you have to put your head down and fight, fight, fight". Today, House Speaker Paul Ryan said he had confidence in Trump, but there are reports that the ground is shifting as of the latest Times story, with more Republicans calling for an investigation.

"This is very concerning and we've got to get to the bottom of this".

"It is time that we look at the idea of whether it's an independent commission or a special prosecutor", Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., said in an interview Wednesday on CNN's New Day. And lawmakers have alleged that the sudden ouster was an attempt to stifle the bureau's investigation into Trump associates' ties to Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

The Arizona Republican says, "We've seen this movie before". The White House denied that Trump had made that request of Comey. At a reporter's prodding, Amash said he had "more confidence in" Comey than Trump.

"This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey".
