It's Officially Blockbuster Season: 'Guardians 2' Opens With $145M

Though Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is the latest adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, chronologically it's actually a prequel to Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man, and Doctor Strange. Bail now if you don't want to know how it all goes down. But now that Gunn has officially signed on to write and direct Vol. 3 - a threequel that will seemingly complete the Guardians trilogy while simultaneously teeing up a new era for the MCU - the Internet is currently awash with speculation and throwaway rumors pertaining to Guardians 3.

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" appears to signal the arrival of the summer movie season.

The "Guardians" franchise is another example of Marvel's might at the box office. That means that so far, the film has already pulled in $427.6 million. In the video above, Collider Video's John Campea, Perri Nemiroff, and Dennis Tzeng dig deep into writer/director James Gunn's follow-up, from that big Ego reveal to Yondu's fate to all five of the post-credits scenes.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is written and directed by James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.

That puts the movie in 6th place on the all-time opening weekends for May.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 now has an 87.79 Composite Score, the third-highest Composite Score for a comic book movie of all time.

ComScore also released the estimated ticket sales from Friday to Sunday at US and Canadian theaters.
