Jackman has played the Adamantium-enhanced mutant in nine X-Men movies, most recently in the critically acclaimed Logan, which was widely hailed as a great send off for his incarnation of the character. Jackman marked the characters final performance in “Logan, ” and is now promoting the films special noir treatment “Logan Noir, ” with a black-and-white version of the film in theaters ahead of the DVD release.

"Logan" stars Hugh Jackman and Dafne Keen appear backstage during the MTV Movie & TV Awards on May 7. But that wasn't always the case. For one thing, he had no idea that a wolverine is a real creature. After all, how can you really get into the head of a wolverine, when you don't even know they exist? "I literally, embarrassingly did about two weeks of research on wolves", he told the Associated Press on Wednesday, May 17. I was rehearsing for three weeks and I was shooting, so I was kind of on my own. "If you remember, [Gladiator's] Maximus has a wolf at the center of his cuirass, and he has a wolf as his companion... which I thought was going to be a bigger deal [at the time]", Crowe stated. That led director Bryan Singer to ask Jackman about the wolf-like qualities that he gave his character.

"According to Jackman, Singer replied, "'Go to the zoo, dude.' I literally didn't know it existed". There was a story point where they go to Vegas, you know how they go to the Oklahoma casino?

Instead of studying the mammal that resembles a small bear, he looked into wolves.

In the movie, Wolverine - also known as the titular Logan - meets a noble end when defending X-23 and her fellow young mutants from the Reavers, but he thought it would have been "more powerful" if he didn't die. Similarly, Jackman's Wolverine character possessed super strength and retractable claws modeled after the real-life animal.
