"The prime minister will dedicate the strategically important bridge to the nation on 26 May".

He said the bridge would contribute to the development of the northeastern region. "This region can play a huge role in connecting India to Southeast Asia", Modi said.

After Kaliabhomora bridge near Tezpur, there is no bridge over the Brahmaputra for the next 375 km upstream till Dhola, where the new bridge is constructed.

Recalling how the concept of the bridge came about, Modi said that on May 29, 2003 an MLA from Assam's Tinsukia district, Jagadish Bhuyan, wrote a letter to Vajpayee demanding a bridge in the area.

The 9.15-km-long bridge will reduce the travel time between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh from six hours to just one hour as the distance will shrink by 165 kms. "Had the Vajpayee government come to power again in 2004, and had Congress not wasted 10 years in between chanting hoti hei and chalti hei, this bridge would have come up ten years ago and the people's dreams would have continued to remain as dreams", Modi said.

"What Atalji dreamt for the northeast is being completed by the BJP government in last three years".

"No doubt in the contemporary period, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is one of the most effective communicators and perhaps can be compared with other illustrious prime ministers like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi who communicated on their principle, on their ideas accepting the Parliamentary form of government and particularly to have a secular Constitution", Mukherjee said.

Sonowal further said that all Cabinet ministers of the Union Government would participate in the public meeting to be held at Khanapara. "This bridge will also help boost the economic development of the region", he said. "The Northeast has that strength to do wonders, with just the right kind of push, and we are committed to give that push", he said. "We are working on connecting Northeast India through airways, railways, roadways and waterways".

Modi, who took a walk on the new bridge, first alone and then with Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal, union road transport minister Nitin Gadkari and state governor Banwarilal Purohit, after a drive to the other end, however did not forget to take a dig at the Congress for the delay in its completion.

Spread over 587 acres, the IARI at Gogamukh will be built with a cost of Rs 155 crores and is expected to usher in a second green revolution in Assam and the northeast.
