A statement posted on Gregg Allman's website Saturday said he had passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah in the U.S. state of Georgia after struggling "with many health issues" for several years. And he always felt like a blues artist - one who was haunted by losses that propelled some of the most memorable music of the 1970s.

PETRUSICH: Well, one of the things that I think is most remarkable about The Allman Brothers - The Allman Brothers Band and, of course, Gregg is that they were founded in Macon, Ga., in 1969. "He kept it very private because he wanted to continue to play music until he couldn't".

"I have lost a dear friend and the world has lost a brilliant pioneer in music", Allman's longtime manager and friend Michael Lehman was quoted as saying in U.S. media reports.

Shannon Williams was the seventh wife for Gregg Allman, but the rock legend said the woman 40 years his junior was the only true love of is life. We had to pay his band, of course, but not him. His cause of death has not been released, but the statement on the band's website says he "struggled with many health issues over the past several years".

His older brother Duane, a legendary guitar player, died in a motorcycle accident in 1971 at the age of just 24. The Allmans fused country blues with San Francisco-style extended improvisation, with their sound creating a template for countless subsequent jam bands.

Gregg Allman's Hammond B-3 organ playing anchored The Allman Brothers' rhythm section and was the ideal counterpoint to the twin lead guitar playing that made The Allman Brothers loved by everyone.

Gregg Allman was born in Nashville in 1947, moving to Daytona Beach at the age of 11. The boys' father, U.S. Army Captain Willis Turner Allman, was shot to death by a drinking acquaintance shortly after the family moved to Norfolk, Virginia in 1949.

"[Gregg Allman] and the Allman Brothers Band set a standard that every band in Florida, as we were coming up, tried in vain to match". He added that it "t$3 ook a while, but now she's totally liberated".

"I had a secretary whose name was Melissa and she was young and cute and that really caught Gregg's eye", Barker told the Bryan County News Saturday evening, just hours after word broke that Allman, 69, had passed away at his Richmond Hill residence. Both songs became staples of their epic live shows; a cathartic 22-minute version of "Whipping Post" was a highlight of their acclaimed 1971 live album, "At Fillmore East".

Reported to be a sometimes troubled, often introspective child, Allman eventually found success working with his brother, Duane Allman, in local bands during the mid 1960s.

The brothers showed little interest in school but were passionate about music and often fought over the $US20 guitar that Gregg had bought at Sears.
