Adviser: Trump's Hostility Toward Germany Will Hurt US Workers

Germany's center-left Social Democrats (SPD) announced Tuesday an urgent reshuffle that puts the country's second-most popular party under renewed pressure as they prepare to fight the federal election on September 24.

"We want the European Union to become stronger and India will play a positive role towards that through the medium of Germany", Modi said after talks with Merkel.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated her stance that Europe must "take our fate into our own hands" following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Germany and France, two strong advocates of the landmark Paris climate change accords, oppose the Trump administration's initiative to potentially pull out of the agreement.

It would be an "immoral and criminal act" to spoil the environment for future generations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today and underlined the need to protect nature, as the Trump administration mulls to overturn the USA position on the 2015 Paris climate accord.

"But the importance we give to these ties can not lead to us renouncing fundamental principles such as our commitments against climate change and for open societies and free worldwide trade".

Trump's fundamental error is to treat allies as though they were adversaries.

Gabriel's comments came a day after Merkel had declared that Europe could no longer completely rely on traditional allies such as the United States and Britain.

But leaders like Merkel and newly elected French President Emmanuel Macron have shown that fracturing Europe could prove tough regardless of whether Trump is involved, according to Frances Burwell, a fellow at the Atlantic Council who focuses on EU-U.S. relations.

Gentiloni was speaking after Merkel made waves with weekend remarks in which she suggested that Brexit-bound Britain and a Trump-led United States may no longer be reliable partners for the European Union. The European members of the alliance did not want to see North Atlantic Treaty Organisation act as a legitimizing platform for unilateral American military involvements across the globe or put them in unwanted contingencies driven by American-only security priorities. "This is what I experienced in the last few days". Merkel stressed on the need for friendly and good relations with the United States as well as Britain and Russian Federation.

Noting that India attaches great value to the German partnership and has had several meetings with CEOs from that country, Modi said that India had been progressively easing its rules on doing business to encourage foreign investment. Merkel herself described her diplomatic encounter with the Americans as "very hard, not to say very unsatisfactory".

"As we begin the negotiations about leaving the EU, we will be able to reassure Germany and other European countries that we are going to be a strong partner to them in defense and security and, we hope, in trade", Britain's interior minister Amber Rudd told BBC radio.

MEA officials said Indian and EU negotiators would meet in July this year and then in October for the EU-India summit in Delhi, in an effort to "take FTA talks forward".
