A big week for European golf, but baby steps to narrow gap

John Daly has always been a fan favorite.

Ernie Els admits he wouldn't have been able to live with his actions had he not called a penalty on himself during the opening round of the BMW PGA Championship.

Daly, 51, won the Insperity Invitational on the PGA Tour Champions at the start of May.

"I can't emphasise how big a week it was", the 41-year-old added.

"I'm really happy. I'm happy my mother and father are here".

"I can't emphasise how big a week it was for me at Sawgrass", Poulter said.

"My nine-under par won a year ago. It's hard to win anywhere".

A revamp of the calendar is under consideration with the 2019 US PGA Championship potentially moving to May.

"The course is unbelievable", he said.

If you play our Fantasy Golf game, you'll know you've only got until midnight on Wednesday to make changes to your team - but who should you pick? But the fairways are attractive. We haven't played on bent this year yet.

All 18 greens have been reseeded and just as we saw at Augusta, sub air technology has been installed under every putting surface to control moisture, although given the outstanding weather forecast this week, I'm pleased to say that shouldn't be necessary.

Els chipped in for eagle at the par five after he had checked for a plugged lie and replaced his ball by the green.

This week signals the start of the innovative Rolex Series which will feature eight events at some of the World's greatest golf courses.

"It will depend on what they do in 2019", he said. I don't think that's a secret to anybody.

"I don't like this golf course". With $437,879 in earnings, he enters this week ranked ninth in the Charles Schwab Cup points standings.

"The greens were bumpy", he said. He was also T7 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T33 at the Masters - and we reckon he's got a good chance of being the third Italian to win the BMW PGA Championship title. "Against the wind it's just there's just no spin".

"I sort of downed tools a little bit for a couple of weeks after the Masters, nearly intentionally to really rest up and recover, and then turn my attentions to the summer, because it's a big summer of golf ahead and you're going to need a lot of energy to get through it".

"I just felt uncomfortable by the way the ball came out".

World number two Rory McIlroy is out of the PGA flagship event due to a recurrence of a rib injury. "I love this week and I'm looking forward to tomorrow". He chalks what his career has been up to a streaky putter. For me, it's between one and two shots easier a round. The greens are running pure but they're also pretty slick and will continue to firm up as the week goes on, as the sun bakes them out and that will suit the better putters like Donald. And I can classify myself as not a great putter. Just hit some very average to bad iron shots. But if I don't putt at least that, it's not going to be a good round.

"I hadn't been feeling like I needed to on the course". "I don't know if I could ever top that week". "The greens seem to be rolling very true and 34 bunkers being taken out is a massive change".
