World number one Johnson doubtful for Masters after freak fall

He is the current world number one, seems to be at his peak physically and mentally, and can not stop winning.

And it is Spieth returning to the place where he tied Woods' record-winning score of 18-under in 2015, but also where he blew a five-shot back-nine lead on Sunday previous year.

"The more and more you play here, you realize certain areas where you can't go", Willett said. After his win at Riviera where he became the world's best player, DJ went onto win the WGC in Mexico to join only a handful of players to follow up becoming World Number 1 with a win.

"I've got a lot of confidence in my game right now, especially with the way I've been playing the last few tournaments".

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson, 2015 victor Jordan Spieth, Australia's driven, powerful and passionate Jason Day and Northern Ireland's four-time major victor Rory McIlroy head the field that includes the top 50 players in the world.

"It's been a relatively quiet buildup to the Masters for me, which has been quite nice", McIlroy said. But Jon Rahm isn't your typical Masters rookie and has won once and finished among the top-10 seven times in 21 PGA Tour starts. That, though, should only galvanize his inventive nature and short-game abilities, something that gets supremely tested at Augusta National.

In the Match Play, he only played twice when Gary Woodland had to withdraw.

Hadwin, for his part, said he didn't spend much time asking McIlroy and Garcia questions about the course on Wednesday morning; he said he wanted to "let them do their thing" and not be a bother.

Nonetheless, I think it's his time.

Dalke finished second in last year's U.S. Amateur in MI, qualifying him to compete in the Masters and the U.S. Open, as well.

TOMMY FLEETWOOD is making his second appearance at the Masters, the first as a player.

The wind was making scoring hard, however, with Amateur champion Scott Gregory, one of a record 11 English players in the field, joining Brian Stuard in running up a triple-bogey seven on the first.

Last year's first-round scoring average was 74.16. A title here would make him just the sixth man to win the career Grand Slam. The former world number 1 has a good record at Augusta and after winning his 1st major at the end of past year he will surely be looking to pick up where he left off and don his first Green Jacket.

Day has a stellar record at The Masters with three top-10 finishes including a runner-up result in 2011.

"The more I can just play the golf course and nearly make it seem like second nature to me, where to hit the balls on the greens and where to start putts and know where the pin positions are ... the more that can become second nature, the better", he said after the practice round.

No amateur has ever won the Masters, and five of them are in the field this year.

After he won the Masters and U.S. Open in 2015, we thought maybe Jordan Spieth would be the next candidate for super stardom.

What made his triumph even more remarkable was his participation at Augusta had been in doubt.

BST: Sandy Lyle is one shot off the lead.

A golf fan who watches tournaments week in and week out and probably has Golf Channel as the power-on channel on their cable box will be able to tell you that the United States' Jim Herman was the champion of last year's Shell Houston Open preceding the Masters.

"It is something that you can't buy in life".

He has the honour of playing in the leading group with Daniel Summerhays and both make birdies at the second hole to take the early lead. He's slipped to No. 17 in the world rankings. Riley said he had the opportunity to play the course "three or four years ago".
