The Michigan adds a stealth element and an extra set of eyes and ears to the already potent carrier strike group on North Korea's coast, but it doesn't add much firepower - US Navy destroyers accompanying the Vinson already have the kind of Tomahawk missiles the Michigan has.

Earlier this month, North Korea conducted its fifth missile test this year.

Trump said he was sending "an armada" to Korean waters potentially to deal with threats from North Korea.

The USS Fitzgerald and the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Forces destroyer JMSDF Choukai on Tuesday, participated in the Sea of Japan exercises, involving ships equipped with the Aegis anti-missile system, Efe news cited a statement by the Japanese Self-Defense Forces.

Wednesday's briefing on the situation in North Korea will be attended by every USA senator.

"We have submarines, very powerful, far more powerful than the aircraft carrier", Trump told Fox Business earlier this month.

The meeting - announced last week and requested by Senate leadership - comes amid the U.S. Navy's bilateral military exercises with South Korea and Japan, and North Korea's live-fire drills to celebrate the anniversary of its military's founding.

Carl Vinson's impending arrival drew blistering remarks from Pyongyang's propaganda outlets and comments from China's leadership calling for caution.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford and Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats are expected to conduct the briefing.

Harris told the committee that the financial sanctions imposed against the North Korean regime by the USA and other countries have done nothing to slow North Korea's quest for weapons of mass destruction. The exercise includes air training and information sharing to improve joint operation and communication between the two militaries.

A photo accompanying the AP article showed the San Diego based destroyer Meyer during joint exercises with the US and South Korea military.

The Navy said that both exercises demonstrate the ability of the USA and Japan to work together at sea to respond quickly to threats in the region. However, the Vinson group surprised the world by first heading to the Indian Ocean for planned exercises with Australia. But the admiral also said he lacks all the attack submarines he needs and has no capable defense against the thousands of artillery pieces North Korea has assembled near the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea.

South Korea's Yonhap news agency says six launchers, some intercept missiles and at least one radar have been deployed. Each March, the US and South Korea conduct Foal Eagle and Key Resolve military drills, which bring a wide range of soldiers and platforms to the region.

The U.S. special representative for North Korea policy, Joseph Yun, on Tuesday agreed with his South Korean and Japanese counterparts in Tokyo that the three nations would "coordinate all actions" on North Korea.
