Already on Friday, Moscow ordered that air defenses in Syria be bolstered, and it dispatched a warship bound for Russia's port off Syria's coast.

USA forces fired a barrage of cruise missiles at a Syrian airbase on Friday in response to what President Donald Trump called a "barbaric" chemical attack that the Damascus regime had launched on its own citizens.

The U.S. gave advanced warning to Moscow, and no Russian Federation troops were killed, but the move nonetheless prompted an angry response from Moscow, which has threatened to cut off military lines of communication in Syria.

The SNP has voted against the United Kingdom taking military action against Syria.

"Immediate strikes do not preclude a more robust strategy". The Obama administration threatened to attack Assad's forces after previous chemical attacks, but never followed through.

A statement on Syrian state TV said "American aggression" had targeted a Syrian military base with "a number of missiles".

"As understandable as the United States military strike against the military infrastructure was after the failure of the UN Security Council, it is now crucial to launch a joint peace effort under the umbrella of the UN".

The United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Sha'irat near Homs late Thursday.

Since Russia's intervention in Syria, the USA has worked to avoid tangling with Russia, whose primary mission has been to stabilize the Assad regime. While the USA has long called for Assad's removal, its lack of direct action against the government has been viewed as a tacit acknowledgement that Syria's strongman was unlikely to be going anywhere.

But the airstrikes against Assad now put the US and Russian Federation in direct confrontation.

The Kremlin said President Vladimir Putin believes the USA strike is an "aggression against a sovereign state in violation of global law".

Ms Gabbard released a separate statement ahead of the attacks on Thursday calling for an investigation into the chemical weapons attack in Syria and the eventual prosecution of Assad in the International Criminal Court. The Syrian government strongly denies responsibility and says it does not use chemical weapons.

Russian Federation has called for an investigation into the matter.

The Russian Defense Ministry considers the USA attack in Syria as a gross violations of the memorandum on indent prevention in Syria and is suspending cooperation on it, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. "The fact of destruction of all chemical weapon stockpiles of the Syrian armed forces was recorded and confirmed by the (Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons)".

Trump, in a 2013 tweet, also opposed airstrikes.

German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel earlier said the strike was "understandable" after the UN Security Council was "unable to clearly and unequivocally respond to the barbaric use of chemical weapons against innocent people in Syria".
