Foreign Minister Wang Yi was speaking Friday at a U.N. Security Council ministerial meeting, amid growing alarm over Pyongyang's weapons development and escalating tensions in the region.

NORTH Korea has warned it is "on the brink of nuclear war" with the U.S. after Donald Trump ordered the deployment of new American weaponry to the region.

As the situation on the Korean Peninsula fluctuates with suggestions of a preemptive strike by the United States, each political party has shown different approaches to the question of "dialogue first" vs 'nuclear disarmament first, ' ahead of the 19th presidential election.

"The present situation in the Korean Peninsula eloquently substantiates how right we were to possess nuclear weapons and to take measures of strengthening the national defence", Ri told Le in the letter.

It also said China was powerful enough to defend itself against North Korea if it came to a "showdown".

Kim pointed out the importance of formalizing inter-Korean dialogue such as the July 4th North-South Joint Statement and the June 15th North-South Joint Declaration.

North Korea on Tuesday conducted a big live-fire exercise to mark the foundation of its military. He is scheduled to arrive in Manila today and deliver a speech at the Asean Business Advisory Council conference tomorrow.

Some senators who attended the briefing said they were unimpressed with the lack of new information given the increasingly tense situation on the Korean Peninsula.

For starters, Washington may need to terminate the state of war on the Peninsula and start to seriously address Pyongyang's major security concerns so that it can rest assured that its government will not be in jeopardy once it drops its nuclear program. "We should not kid ourselves here", Kelly Magsamen, former principal deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, she told the senate on Tuesday.

"ASEAN also urges the DPRK and all parties concerned to exercise self-restraint in order to de-escalate tension and refrain from actions that may aggravate the situation", the statement read.

In an interview with Channel NewsAsia, Minh said ASEAN's stand includes calling for the de-escalation of the standoff, denuclearisation and for the resumption of the six-party talks.

"There must be some concession".

"If there's an underlying motive to Washington's increased belligerence.it is to get the Chinese sufficiently rattled that they become serious about sanctions beyond tokenistic enforcement".

"When inter-Korean dialogue is resumed, we will create two-plus-two talks at the ministerial level".

The Philippines, which is the current Asean chair, is going all out to ensure the 30th Asean Summit runs smoothly.

It's unclear if ASEAN leaders will also issue a separate statement on the issue, but the Chairman's statement will likely have a portion on it.
