Gareth Southgate is in complete awe of Eddie Jones' coaching philosophies

There was poise and panache from those in blue, with the only ingredient lacking - albeit, a key one - a ruthlessness in front of goal.

England did not score, of course, but Southgate was right to try a different system in a friendly and there was distinct promise in the experiment, with the visitors matching Germany for shots and beating them for possession and corners.

England play Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Sunday, a game that will be marked by high security following Wednesday's attack in Westminster in which at least four people died.

Eric Dier admits the memory of England's defeat to Iceland last summer is enough to deter his side from becoming complacent.

Uncapped Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson trained with the senior team for the first time.

Southgate will also be without the suspended Gary Cahill and injured Phil Jones, giving him a headache in central defence, a position Dier is capable of stepping into if required. At 29 he is the second-oldest player remaining in Southgate's squad, after Jermain Defoe, and with 69 caps the most experienced. They were physical, but they play more football now. Instead, he insisted, the job of making new players feel welcome was a collective one.

"You would probably say the same if I wasn't in the squad, but if I wasn't here I don't think it would make much of a difference". To play it, you need young, fresh, energetic legs.

The Manchester City keeper captained England in a 2-0 loss to Spain in 2015. England do not usually source their centre forward from the Premier League's rock bottom club but Sunderland's last best hope has proved he has the experience, pedigree and form to lead the line if duty calls.

"This is particularly upsetting as together we have worked incredibly hard to improve the image of English supporters over recent years however it is clear that there is more work to be done to ensure that we don't see a repeat of this behaviour at future matches". I think he's respected by everybody in the group.

"We are a very young team and we want to be part of something with him that's something special".

Now, the 3-4-3 choice by Southgate may seem like he wants England to play a game of domination, but as their performance against Germany shows, this is not the case.

'We had nine players and Harry Kane and Danny Rose and others had to have treatment and Wayne the same, ' said Southgate. It's a collective effort with the Football Supporters Federation, with the Home Office, the police, but ultimately what is needed here is a cultural change.
