Federer struggles past Berdych to reach Miami Open semis

Nick Kyrgios's excellent tournament form has continued with a straight-sets win over Alexander Zverev at the Miami Open, setting up a semi-finals clash with Roger Federer.

"Kyrgios and Zverev are very exciting players, two of the most exciting players we have on tour now", he said.

Pleased with his honesty, Kyrgios was then overheard saying "I want to see this on social media" as Zverev gave him a thumbs up.

Wozniacki will play No. 10 Johanna Konta in Saturday's championship match.

Berdych broke to go 5-3 up and took the contest into a third set, where Federer made the most of some unforced errors from his opponent to break at 4-2 but then, uncharacteristically, Federer let some sloppiness creep into his game.

Kyrgios was due to play Federer in the last eight at Indian Wells, but had to pull out of that match due to sickness, saying he got food poisoning.

The 35-year-old Swiss, who has already clinched the Australian Open and Indian Wells titles so far this year, struggled past 10th seed Berdych 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) in a thrilling last-eight contest that lasted nearly two hours.

But Federer held on and was handed the victory when Berdych double faulted. "But I think I showed great heart today". Yet Berdych responded by rattling off the next two games for the loss of just one point.

"I don't know what I was thinking", Kyrgios said.

When Federer got the chance to serve for the match at 5-3 though, he lost the game to love and the match went to a tie break.

The Swiss saved his second match point with an unplayable first serve and set up his own match point with an ace down the middle. "He was the one serving out the match, didn't make it".

"Sick atmosphere", Federer told the crowd afterward.

This will be the second consecutive time two double-digit seeds make the women's final at Key Biscayne, after No. 13 Victoria Azarenka beat No. 15 Svetlana Kuznetsova a year ago.

Fognini, 29, who matched his best showing in an ATP Masters 1000 event, will next play the victor of Wednesday night's match between Rafael Nadal and Jack Sock.
