(Matt Stone/The Boston Herald via AP, Pool, File). He is launching an investigation as to whether this death was a murder orchestrated by either inmates or staff within the prison. It has more than 1,000 cells. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead an hour later.

His 2015 conviction had cemented a spectacular fall from grace for Hernandez, who once had a $40 million, five-year contract with the Patriots. He was released by the Patriots in June of 2013, immediately after being arrested for Lloyd's murder.

The 27-year-old had taken his own life reportedly using his bedsheet, MA prison authorities say.

Aaron Josef Hernandez, born November 6, 1989, was an American football tight end and convicted murderer who played college football at the University of Florida.

Massachusetts State Police are investigating, Fallon added.

Here is the full statement from the Department of Corrections.

Hernandez was at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Mass, at the time of his death.

"We're aware of the report, but do not anticipate issuing a statement today", the team said.

Hernandez, who was already serving a life sentence after being convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of Odin Lloyd, was facing murder charges for the deaths of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu, two men killed in a drive-by shooting outside of a Boston nightclub.

Hernandez was discovered hanging in his cell by corrections officers at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley just after 3 a.m., authorities said. One of his attorneys said Hernandez was relieved about the verdict. He says Hernandez would have been transferred to a mental health unit if there was any concern about his well-being.

He was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the Lloyd murder. He was acquitted on Friday of a 2012 double homicide in Boston. Mr. Hernandez hanged himself utilizing a bed sheet that he attached to his cell window.
