The official also said that the USA bombing was meant to send a message to the Syrian regime that any use of chemical weapon will not be tolerated by the US.

The US air strikes triggered a major worldwide row after they were angrily condemned by Russian Federation.

The council was meeting in an emergency session after the United States launched a barrage of missile strikes on a Syrian air base in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack.

A Syrian air base targeted in a USA cruise missile attack is operating again, the governor of Syria's Homs province confirmed on Saturday.

"I don't think that the president wants to get into the Syrian crisis in a major way but he was shocked by the action on the use of chemical weapons".

Obama warned that any use of chemical or biological weapons by Syrian dictator Bashar Assad would cross a "red line" and compel action from the U.S. nearly exactly a year later, in August 2013, Assad's regime launched an attack using chemical weapons in a suburb of Damascus.

Trump, in announcing the attack, urged other countries to join the U.S.in moving "to end the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria".

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has canceled a planned trip to Russia because of fast-changing developments in Syria - prompting a mocking tweet and a Russian official to take a dig at the West.

"The people of Syria have suffered immensely", he said, adding that a solution to the conflict needs to be devised.

On Friday night, 59 U.S. Tomahawk missiles pounded the Shayrat air base, just days after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is believed to have launched a deadly chemical weapons attack on civilians.

"In the opinion of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump has sent a strong and clear signal that further proliferation and use of chemical weapons, including against defenseless civilians in Syria, will not be tolerated", it said.

Mr Johnson had originally planned to fly out to Moscow at the end of March, but rescheduled the visit in order to attend a meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation counterparts, including US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

Assad, after all, is supported by Russian Federation with whom the current USA administration wants to strike up a cordial working relationship.
