For now at least, Verlander appears to be born again hard, and the Tigers can contend as long as that continues.

The season is only a week old, and already the Boston Red Sox have faced quite a bit of adversity. Moreland did score, but it likely prevented a bigger inning.

The Red Sox had their opportunities vs. Verlander, particularly in the second when Mitch Moreland led off with a double, Pablo Sandoval walked, and Chris Young reached on an error.

Meanwhile, Sale just kept doing Sale things.

"He threw me a curveball and I was able to get a barrel on it", said Mahtook, who was playing his first home game for the Tigers after being acquired in the offseason. He went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles on Monday, giving him five in the series.

It's games like these that illustrate why the Detroit Tigers moved Nicolas Castellanos into the two hole. Iglesias, who was 0-for-12 entering the game, made his first hit of the season a big one as he drilled a 94 miles per hour fastball into the left-field stands.

Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes has three homers in five innings against the Philadelphia Phillies. It seemed to fire up the Tiger's ace, and he let the umpire know it. He added that the players had a job to be done and each one was doing what they could at the best of their abilities.

Padres 5, Rockies 3 • Wil Myers hit a leadoff triple in the eighth inning to complete the first cycle of his career, helping visiting San Diego win. Andrew Romine stood on second following a double and Ian Kinsler on first after walking on a 3-1 pitch from Chris Sale. Detroit's second baseman took full advantage, depositing it into the left field seats to tie the game at one. "To finally have a fresh start and healthy spring, then come into the first game and do this means a lot". It didn't work out that way on Monday, though. They're also 0-4 in his last four outings when he faces a team with a winning record but are 5-2 in his last seven starts after they allowed five runs or more in their previous game.

Then, the bottom of the eighth happened. It's not clear how much time he'll miss, but even after all their illnesses run their course, the Red Sox may not be at full strength for a while. Things started off just fine, too. It was a grounder down the third base line that could have possibly been stopped by Holt to hold Romine to a single, but it took a bad bounce right over Holt's glove.

Sale sat down the next eight straight batters until Kinsler returned to the plate in the sixth and crushed a first-pitch fastball for a solo homer to tie the game 1-1. Trying to get outs and I wasnt able to do that at the end.”. Hembree threw one pitch to retire Cabrera on a fly ball to right field. Given all this, it is hardly surprising the Red Sox are struggling to produce offensively, a pattern that continued on Saturday afternoon. The main goal there is to make them put it in play, and not give any free passes, ” said Wilson, whose only other ninth-inning save opportunity came on July 27 last season, also against Boston.
