That's when the 8-year-old boy took his father's work van and left the home to take his sister to McDonald's.

"He probably looked it up for five minutes and then said it was time to go", East Palestine police officer Jacob Koehler told the Morning Journal News.

The boy had stood on his tiptoes to get the keys and took his 4-year old sister with him for the food run.

The boy pulled up to the drive-thru window on Sunday to get his cheeseburger.

He learned to drive by watching YouTube videos, and witnesses say the boy had no issues in operating the vehicle - he stopped for traffic lights and stayed within the speed limit.

Witnesses say the boy appeared to obey traffic laws.

The parents were not in the back of the van as employees thought they would be.

"The workers thought that the parents were in the back, but obviously they weren't", police told the newspaper.

The boy drove about a mile and a half from his home to the restaurant shortly after 8 p.m.

"Me and my sister really wanted a cheeseburger", the boy told Koehler.

"A friend of the family saw what was going on and called the grandparents".

The boy had been craving a cheeseburger, but his parents were sleeping, police said.
