Spur is almost 70 miles east of Lubbock, Texas. In 2013, three researchers died when a twister packing winds up to 165 miles per hour turned on them near El Reno, Oklahoma. The center predicts "an active severe weather event" Thursday from New Orleans to Cincinnati. An even greater threat exists Thursday in northern MS and western Tennessee.

The weather service said severe thunderstorms are possible tonight, primarily south of Interstate 70, with the possibility of large hail and damaging winds of more than 60 miles per hour.

As of 1:30 am - we had 63 severe reports on Weds. - including 4 tornadoes - 2 already rated EF-1.

"That's going to be really dependent on where the front is, it may be more east of the Springfield area", says Meteorologist Jeff Raberding with the National Weather Service.

Late Tuesday, storms struck Oklahoma and northern Texas with tornadoes, tennis ball-sized hail and powerful winds. Roofs and walls were ripped away early Wednesday from homes in Rockwall, northeast of Dallas, and the city's mayor, Jim Pruitt, said one person suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Other storms could occur from OH to the Gulf coast.

"Severe storms damaging winds, large hail, and possibly several tornadoes are expected across Middle Tennessee on Thursday afternoon and evening", according to the National Weather Service.

In a statement about their deaths, the Weather Channel called Williamson and Yarnall "beloved members of the weather community".

"There is no parent who will ever be prepared to bury their child", said Karen Di Piazza, the mother of Peoria-based storm chaser Corbin Jaeger, who died Tuesday.

While pursuing the storm, Williamson apparently ran through a stop sign at a rural intersection in northwest Texas, according to Gonzalez. The passenger was his friend and fellow storm chaser, Randall Delane Yarnall, 55, also of Cassville. But one such pursuit ended tragically when three men were killed as their vehicles collided at a rural crossroads.

The storms came after heavy rain has caused some minor flooding across portions of the Chicago area.
