J.C. Penney announced February 24 it would close as many as 140 of its 1,046 stores this year and offer early retirement to some 6,000 employees who qualify based on their age and years of service.

"The company doesn't comment on analyst reports or market speculation, and will issue a list of closing locations in mid-March", Joey Thomas, speaking for Plano, Texas, based J.C. Penney Co.

The Maine Mall's JCPenney is one of the 39 stores listed.

A Destiny USA spokesman also declined to comment on the report.

J.C. Penney has not yet released the names of the stores.

The targeted locations either need expensive, extensive renovation or are underperformers financially, said J.C. Penney.

The company shut its store at the Camillus Mall in Camillus in 1997 and closed its store at the ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt in 2016.

Morningstar identified a J.C. Penney at the Maine Mall in South Portland as being at risk of closure but no others in New England other than the Mall of New Hampshire store.

A firm closing date has not been announced.

JCPenney says it is closing stores that require a significant investment or have below-average sales.
