Local agencies participate in tornado drill

The National Weather Service forecast in Mason City calls for showers and thunderstorms likely before 9 p.m. Monday with a chance of precipitation afterward.

The National Weather Service warns that "a vast area of the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest are expecting high winds" on Tuesday.

Winter said the drill is the flawless opportunity for businesses, schools and families to test their own severe weather procedures.


According to the Associated Press, in eastern Iowa authorities said severe thunderstorms that raced across Iowa spawned tornadoes and left behind damage and power outages.

"Know what you're going to do, it's not fun to not know when you need that information immediately during a storm", Clippert said of preparing for severe weather.

The state received a waiver from the FCC to use the Tornado warning tone-alert for the weather radio and EAS for TV/Radio stations. There were 121 flash flood warnings issued previous year and 121 incidents of flash flooding across the state, many of which were associated with Hurricane Matthew.


The National Weather Service advises having an emergency supply kit ready that contains things like bottled water, flashlights, a radio with extra batteries, prescription drugs and first aid supplies. In fact, the tornado warnings were raised for the west and northwest Missouri.

"Occasionally we can get a small tornado along a leading edge of a bow echo or a squall line, but [they] typically produce widespread wind damage or straight-line wind damage".

The path length of this tornado was.04 miles.


Students, faculty and staff may register with the Campus Emergency and Outreach Notification (CEON) system to receive alerts when tornado warnings are issued for areas that include the Arkansas Tech campuses.
