Kolkata: Fire breaks out at Burrabazaar area; situation not under control

A major fire broke out at a multi-storied building in the commercial hub Burrabazar area in central Kolkata on Monday, police and fire brigade sources said.

The fire broke out at third floor or 3, Amartalla Lane, near famous and busy Bagri Market in Burrabazar, one of the most congested and busiest market of South Asia. "Three firemen sustained minor injuries", said Gour Prasad Ghosh, director of fire services.

Some 45 fire fighting engines were deployed to combat the blaze tillthis morning with the assistance of local police and civilians aftercordoning off the roads from all direction.

Fire Minister Sovan Chatterjee rushed to the spot but was injured on the way as several inflammable containers kept in the building were exploding.

As many as 30 fire tenders and more than 70 fire fighters were pressed into action who fought the flames throughout the night. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee telephoned him to take stock of the situation late in the night.

However, there had been no casualty among the residents, the firefighting officials, said today.

"Even though the flames could be arrested after almost 12 hours, pockets of fires were still there in some parts of the building". News agency ANI reproted that the situation is not under control yet.

"The fire is still on in some pockets of the building. But we can't say if it would collapse", the official said.

The state government has also made a decision to take strong steps to make citizens install fire safety measures while constructing buildings.
