England captain's role is a job for one man only — Geoff Hurst

He wants to make Gareth Southgate's squad for next year's tournament in Russian Federation - should England qualify - but conceded that would be in doubt if Sunderland were relegated.

'Everyone knows how much I love playing football, love scoring goals.

"It's obviously an incredibly proud feeling for me", said Ward-Prowse.

Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse has revealed his call-up to Gareth Southgate's England squad fulfilled a "life-long ambition".

It has been more than three years since Jermain Defoe pulled on an England shirt, but the 34-year-old never for a second thought that would be his lot.

"It's positive that if you're doing well as a young player, you'll get a chance".

Although World Cup victor Hurst thinks leaving Rooney out for the forthcoming games against Germany and Lithuania is the right decision, he strongly opposes Southgate's idea of picking a captain on a game-by-game basis.

"You have to be playing at the top level. You probably need to be playing in the Premier League". That was hard news to accept at the time but you have to be realistic and think the boys I'm competing against are playing in the Premier League and Europe. It's something I wanted to do as a kid, growing up watching the major players on TV and wanting to emulate them.

"I've been lucky enough to have experienced it". In this team I believe there will be a lot of chances to score goals.

"If I do get an opportunity to go to another major tournament it would be a dream", he added.

Saints team-mate Nathan Redmond, another yet to make his senior debut, has also moved up to the senior side. "It is one that the under-21s have received before, sort of highlighted about the highs and lows of a career and the ambitions that he sees for us. But if you're doing it in a side that's struggling, and have been for some time, it's encouraging and he thoroughly deserves his inclusion".

He was asked if he would need to be in the Premier League to be in the squad, with Sunderland in relegation trouble. "I'm here on merit, as the manager has said, and hopefully I can show that".
