A large area near the movie theater had been blocked off, with several dozen police vehicles in the vicinity.

WAFB in Baton Rouge is reporting that the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said a deputy was shot and killed late Saturday night.

Authorities in Louisiana say a sheriff's deputy is dead after being shot.

This is the second tragic cop killing to strike the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office in the past 12 months.

Authorities did not release the identities of either the deputy killed or the suspect. Our thoughts, our prayers, our condolences go out to the Sheriff's deputy's family and all of our law enforcement agents who certainly feel a brotherhood and a sisterhood when something like this takes place. "We're focused on working with the family, praying for the family, and making sure that our deputies have the help and the support that they need." said EBRSO spokeswoman, Casey Rayborn Hicks. Despite efforts of the medical team, the deputy's injuries were fatal.

The suspected gunman is also being treated for a gunshot wound.

The shooting also claimed the lives of two Baton Rouge Police Department officers, and injured a third officer with that department.

The deputy was rushed to an area hospital and listed in critical condition after the shooting.
