Article 50 to be triggered on 29 March

The move will pave the way for two years of negotiations, with the country expected to be out of the bloc by the end of March 2019.

The EU said it was ready to begin the negotiations and within 48 hours of the trigger on March 29, Tusk will send the other 27 member states his draft negotiating guidelines, which means that talks could start in May.

Brexit secretary David Davis said that there is a Fixed Term Parliament Act, which the prime minister intends to honor.

Article 50, which has never been used before, is quite simple and only consists of five short paragraphs.

The government has indicated that Britain could make contributions to the European Union budget to ensure trade access.

Holyrood's Brexit minister has criticised the UK Government after claiming Tory politicians in London "forgot" to inform Scotland of the date when Article 50 will be triggered.

Meanwhile, an European Union spokesperson told reporters in Brussels that they are "ready and waiting" for the letter.

The triggering of the Lisbon Treaty comes nine months after Britain voted out of the European Union 51.9% to 48.9%.
