It will be interesting to see Cruz's interpretation of the famed Italian fashion designer who took over her brother, Gianni Versace's, fashion empire after he was brutally murdered on the steps of his home in Miami Beach.

Penelope Cruz has joined the cast of FX's "Versace: American Crime Story", TheWrap has learned.

The Oscar victor is set to topline FX's Ryan Murphy anthology Versace: American Crime Story, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. His killer, Andrew Cunanan (Darren Criss), committed suicide eight days later as Miami Dade police were on the verge of capturing the serial killer behind five slayings.

It will not air until after series two, which will focus on Hurricane Katrina and is slated to debut in 2018.

The first installment of Murphy's American Crime Story revolved around the O.J. Simpson case and earned several Emmy awards including lead acting honors for Courtney B. Vance and Sarah Paulson and a supporting actor prize for Sterling K. Brown.

The story is based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth. Talk about a double whammy! The pop icon won a Golden Globe for her performance on Murphy's other wildly popular FX series, American Horror Story: Hotel. (Showrunner Murphy shot down those reports in January).

All the series come from executive producer Ryan Murphy, who's very busy. So I just don't think with her schedule, I knew that it would never had worked.

She has also been a muse for Pedro Almodovar, starring in some of his best work like 2006's Volver. Though Pepe Cruz is a surprising, and wholly welcome, choice for Donatella, she's got some big, Gina Gershon-sized stilettoes to fill. Hit the comments to dish and discuss.
