The 22-year-old, the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy and a former boyfriend of Taylor Swift, pleaded guilty to a charge of disorderly conduct through his lawyer on Wednesday, reports People.

Kennedy was given a six month deferred sentence which means the plea will be wiped from his record if he stays out of trouble.

Aspen attorney Ryan Kalamaya appeared instead on Kennedy's behalf and said his client was defending a friend outside the Bootsy Bellows nightclub before he was arrested.

Kennedy reprimanded a group of four men and asked them to apologize to his friend after they were heard making homophobic comments.

Kennedy, who also made headlines during his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift, must pay $535 in fines and court costs, avoid drinking or using drugs for six months and write a letter to his victim, who was not seriously injured.

A police officer already at the scene on another matter saw Kennedy pull the man to the ground.

Police say Kennedy and another man were fighting in the street December 29, and officers reported seeing Kennedy punch the man in the head four or five times. "But on the other hand, I'm proud that he stands up to bullies".
