Manipur polls: Congress goes to EC on Irom Sharmila's allegation against BJP

Manipur is going to hold the assembly polls on March 4 and 8.

Imphal, Feb. 15: With the Manipur assembly elections are just 17 days away, election campaigns as well as other electioneering activities are on in full swing across the 60 assembly constituencies in the state since the past one week.

While speaking at the flag hoisting ceremony of INC candidate, at the residence of Naoroibam Ratan (Kapu) contesting from Heingang assembly constituency, Ibobi said, "Deserted congress must also know that they have left behind incomplete developmental projects recklessly abandoning their responsibilities".

Sharmila covered a distance of approximately 20 kilometres from Imphal on her bicycle to file her nomination.

The Congress moved the Election Commission on Wednesday, demanding a probe into allegations by civil rights activist Irom Sharmila that she was approached by a BJP functionary with an offer of money to contest the Manipur assembly poll as a party nominee. Ibobi, the three time chief minister of Manipur, is eyeing for a fourth term in office after being elected successively in 2002, 2007 and 2012 respectively.

Crusader Irom Sharmila had announced her political debut by forming PRJA after ended her 16-year long hunger strike in August last.

Interestingly, the whistle is also the election sign of Irom's party People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) which was launched in October a year ago.

"The ruling Congress shall win absolute majority in the non-Naga areas". I want to become the Chief Minister to repeal the AFSPA.

Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, who also filed his nomination papers on Thursday, wished her luck.
