In a rather surprising turn of events, a 17-year-old boy who worked as a construction labourer, woke up on the way to his funeral in Managundi village in Dharwad.

Kumar's relatives presumed him dead after they noticed there was no body movement or breathing. He was then rushed to a private hospital and his condition is critical, a report in TOI said. He had high fever since the past few weeks post which he was admitted to a hospital.

His health deteriorated quickly and last week doctors told his family he would not survive being taken off life support and the decision was made to pull the plug.

Amid deepening fears for his survival, the boy was later moved home after experts informed his family a life-threatening infection had spread throughout his body. Onlookers and relatives reportedly rushed him to a hospital nearby.

The family chose to discontinue medical treatment and take him home.

Doctor Mahesh Neelakhantannavar said that, "Kumar is on the ventilator".

The family and villagers, however, were startled when on the way to ritual site to perform his last rites, Kumar opened his eyes with rapid breathing and moving his arms and legs around.

They chose to take him straight to his funeral - but had hardly carried him two kilometres when Kumar opened his eyes and started moving again. We suspect he suffers from meningoencephalitis, an infection caused due to dog bite.

Kumar's parents are also daily wage labourers and have appealed for money for his treatment. "We need support for his treatment", his parents Ningappa and Manjula said. His elder brother is physically challenged.
