"Realistically we need 3 to 5 inches of snow so that we can have a safe event", Popp said.

Organizers say that if more snow doesn't come by Saturday, they might scrap the slate of races altogether and hold a street party.

All the races of the 2017 American Birkebeiner have been canceled.

Races canceled include the 2017 American Birkebeiner, Kortelopet and Prince Haakon.

According to Fox 21, the Birkie course has been altered nine other times in its history due because of low snow or open ice, but has only been canceled once before, in 2000. Birkie skiers are passionate about the overall experience. Skiers can take buses from the Como Parking Lot in Cable to the 5K at the Birkebeiner Trailhead beginning at 9:30 a.m. There will be a soup tent, beer garden and more. "We know that the Birkie is so much more than a race to so many". Also, race officials moved the demos scheduled for Sunday to Saturday so participants can peruse the latest ski gear and fat bikes.

A winter storm warning issued for the Hayward area on Thursday had infused racers and organizers with hope, but the storm never materialized Friday as it continued on a path south of the area. Citing areas of the trail that lack snow, race officials said a timed event would be unsafe.
