Crisis-hit Valencia bolstered their defence with the signings of centre-backs Eliaquim Mangala on a season-long loan from Manchester City and Argentine global Ezequiel Garay on Wednesday.

The club failed in an attempt to hijack Axel Witsel's move to Juventus but have also held talks with Zenit St Petersburg about signing Garay, the centre back.

Garay, capped 32 times by Argentina, has signed a four-year deal with Valencia.

As well as his spell in Russian Federation, the 29-year-old has also played for Benfica, Real Madrid, Racing Santander and Argentine club Newell's over the course of his career.

Valencia have moved to replace Shkodran Mustafi, who joined Arsenal on Tuesday.

The defender is no stranger to the Spanish League, having previously featured for Racing Santander and Real Madrid, where he attracted heavy interest from Manchester United.
