American shooter Ginny Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio Olympics, then spoke of her sadness at how America's gun control controversy has affected her sport.

Thrasher finished a point ahead of two-time gold medalist Li Du of China. The win marked the first medal awarded at these Rio Games and also the first big upset.

Thrasher, a Springfield, Va., native, learned to shoot with her grandfather. "I was focusing on just shooting the best that I could, and that got me there".

To come back to the Olympics: I was last in Rio in 2014 for the FIFA World Cup, and I have to say that while the economy in Brazil has weakened, while there are dark political clouds that hover, the indomitable spirit of the average Brazilian and that of Rio remains unaltered.

Her interest in competitive shooting was piqued by a hunting trip as a youngster. "I knew it was a realistic expectation for me to get into the finals and once you get into the finals, anything can happen". They concentrate harder than most, are more disciplined, and certainly these are part of the package Thrasher brings with her air rifle to tournament play, so much so that she sounded offended when someone asked her if she had to cut out caffeine the day before a match to make sure she would not have any shakes.

"For me to start Rio 2016 with a gold medal for the U.S. makes me incredibly proud".

China's Yi Siling took the bronze.

Williams owns four gold medals: one in singles and three in doubles.

OK, so it's just one gold medal in one event, and we're tied for second overall right now, but everything matters in the Games.

The count in Rio Olympics 2016 is much bigger than the initial order for male contraceptives in the London Olympics in 2012 when 150,000 condoms were delivered to the athletes' village, New York Post reported.

Thrasher stood her ground against the two Chinese shooters in the medal eliminations, hitting nothing lower than 10.4.

"I am very proud", Tommasone said of being the first boxing pro at an Olympics.

"To be able to compete in the sport I love, it's just the best thing in the world".

With the first full day of competition in the books, the 2016 Olympics return on Sunday for more action.

"I was so inspired by winning, that I couldn't step away and won again in 2004", Lopez said, who attends St. Theresa Catholic Church in Sugar Land, Texas.
