The 22nd Gold for Michael Phelps!

She won her fourth gold medal of these Olympics on Friday night, setting a world record in the 800-meter freestyle and treating the pool at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium like her personal splash zone. Thursday's win also now ranks Phelps among other Olympians - track and field stars Carl Lewis and Al Oerter - as the only three Americans to take gold in an individual event four times, the New York Times reports.

One swimmer initially listed without a time was Kuwait's Faye Husain, who is competing as an independent athlete in Rio because her country's national Olympic committee was suspended by the IOC for alleged government interference in several sports federations.

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) - Katie Ledecky even upstaged Michael Phelps at the Olympics on Friday. "But I won't be competing in Tokyo".

"This is it. I'm not doing it". "That was the only reason I was able to get back to where I once was". (But) this is final.

"I am not going four more years".

"I never thought I would be in this position but I'm so blessed and honored to be on the medal stand".

Plans call for the course to be public for at least 20 years. Maya DiRado of the United States, who has won gold, silver and bronze at her first Olympics, was third fastest in 2:08.60. He insists the same will not happen again.

"Right now, I'm taking it one race at a time", said Franklin, who is struggling to understand her puzzling lack of form this year. He swam a great race.

"I'm excited to see what more is to come".

"I'm ready to retire".

Phelps won his first gold medal of the Rio games in a scintillating relay race this past Sunday.

He posed for a photo with the then 13-year-old, which has since been shared widely on social media.

Earlier, men's singles semifinals will be held starting with a 12 p.m. match between Britain's Andy Murray and Japan's Kei Nishikori. "I've received a lot of support and that's phenomenal", Schooling told reporters. I couldn't really smile. "But, I mean, I went out there and swam as fast as I could and my color just comes with the territory".

That tied her with 16-year-old Canadian Penny Oleksiak, the pair sharing a new Olympic record and both receiving a gold medal. World Sailing spokesman Darryl Seibel said van Acker, the bronze medalist at London and a favorite to return to the podium in Rio, was evaluated by the chief medical officer after her races.

"Throughout this whole process of even starting swimming it was tough fitting in, so I hope I can be an inspiration to someone else because I know the journey wasn't always easy for me", said Manuel. "I'll really cherish that for the rest of my life". That's the glaring look Phelps directed at bitter rival Chad le Clos on Monday night as the South African appeared to try to rattle Phelps with a shadow-boxing show in the waiting room.

Schooling was equally complimentary of Phelps.

Leonidas was renowned not only for his unsurpassed number of victories but, much like Phelps, for his versatility as an athlete. "I'm sorry if I don't seem like I'm full of emotions right now. This is not me done".

As was the case in the 400 free, where she crushed her own world record, Ledecky was merely racing the clock as she powered away from the field to touch in 8 minutes, 4.79 seconds, eclipsing the mark of 8:06.68 that she set at a grand prix meet in Texas back in January.

But the Frenchman was second this time, by 0.01 as Ervin won in 21.40.
