Phelps grabs more gold as Olympics roll on

The team of Michael Phelps, Caeleb Dressel, Nathan Adrian and Ryan Held pushed its way to the top thanks to a dominant performance by Phelps who now has an Olympic record 23 medals including 19 gold.

In light of the scandal surrounding Russia's alleged state-sponsored doping program, the fact that three Russian swimmers were able to compete in the Rio Olympics just days before the Games drew the ire of fans and worldwide swimmers alike.

Secondly, Phelps' body is a finely tuned machine involved in races decided by fractions of a second.

Russian state TV reportedly compared Michael Phelps' non-scientific cupping method to meldonium, a banned substance that has resulted in the doping suspensions of many Russians, including Efimova and tennis star Maria Sharapova. And, not surprisingly, times get slower as an athlete ages. It dates back centuries and has enjoyed a bit of a renaissance over the past decade after athletes like Phelps and National Football League star DeMarcus Ware and actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston started touting its benefits. In 2008, the USA upset France by 0.08 seconds, but France got revenge and claimed gold in 2012. The U.S.A. lost by four-tenths of a second to the French in the London Olympics in 2012.

"He was very much into it", Bowman said.

Cseh doesn't have the same renown as Phelps, but he is almost as impressive - particularly given what he's done in the latter stages of his career. Ryan hasn't competed yet this summer, but he's now getting ready to go up against Michael Phelps in the 200-meter individual medley starting on Wednesday, Aug. 10. To have one swimmer in his 30s contend for a medal is unheard of.

Phelps, the most medalled Olympic athlete, winning gold for the fourth Games in a row, could appreciate exactly what that felt like, even if it was 12 years since he first topped the podium.

Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, started using the therapy two years ago, according to the New York Times, and now swears by it. Cseh is expected to battle for bronze with a predicted time of 50.7 seconds.

Michael Phelps has been using it regularly for a while.

The U.S. will have a good shot at another gold in the women's 200 free, with Katie Ledecky looking to make it 2-for-2 in the longer freestyle events.

Sutherland estimates that Le Clos, Phelps and Cseh will be the only swimmers in Rio to post times under 1:53 seconds in the 200-metre butterfly.

Fellow gold medal victor Michael Phelps advanced to this evening's 200-meter butterfly semifinals tonight by finishing fifth in the preliminary heats with a time of 1 minute, 55.73 seconds.

Racing nothing but the clock, Katie Ledecky gave the US its first victory by crushing her own world record in the 400 freestyle.
